The Houston Business and Tax Law Journal ("HBTLJ") is a scholarly journal managed and distributed by students at the University of Houston Law Center. The Journal serves the scholarly interests of students, academics, and professionals within the legal community. HBTLJ is a medium for thought provoking academic discussions and practical application insights in the following areas of law: Corporate, Securities, Bankruptcy, Antitrust, Intellectual Property, Employment, Labor, Mergers/Acquisitions, and Tax.
HBTLJ is comprised of an e-journal and a bi-annual printed edition. The concept of an e-journal was conceived to take advantage of the unique powers and capabilities of the Internet. Our website was launched on April 13th 2000, becoming the first online journal in the State of Texas. The limitless character of an electronic publication allows HBTLJ to achieve its goals in ways that traditional journals have not been able to accomplish. For instance, HBTLJ offers the advantage of "rolling publication"; articles are continuously published online after going through a rigorous editing process. In this way, HBTLJ can provide authors accelerated access to publication and feedback on their work. Visitors can view the articles in two different formats: an HTML frames version where the footnotes are linked for enhanced readability, and an Adobe Acrobat/printable version that is duplicative of the annual printed version. Furthermore, the site features a discussion page, an internal search engine, an article submission page, and an e-mail subscription function. HBTLJ's website also incorporates interactive Internet media into the articles as well as throughout the site. The annual printed edition will consist of all articles and comments by scholars and professionals published on the e-Journal. Selected student works will also be included in the printed edition. The combined approach of an e-journal and printed edition allows HBTLJ to be on the cutting edge of technology while also following the traditional aspects of a law journal.
HBTLJ was founded by law students with a strong interest in business and tax law. We offer the opportunity to consider and discuss the most pervasive and relevant topics in contemporary law. We are committed equally to pure scholarship and its practical application. In addition to the commitment from the Board of Editors and the members, HBTLJ is privileged to have the guidance of professors at the Law Center. Professors Paul Janicke, Douglas K. Moll, Raymond T. Nimmer, Michael A. Olivas, Ira B. Shepard, William P. Streng, Ronald Turner, and Christine Agnew serve as faculty advisors for the Journal. This very distinguished group provides the editors and members with expertise in all areas of business and tax law.
